The canine-human relationship is probably one of the most misunderstood dynamics in our culture today. There is no shortage of training systems, gurus, devices, podcasts and tv shows geared to facilitate and demystify the ancient relationship between man and his best friend.

Dogs have, as humans do, an individual relationship with everyone they meet. This can be clearly demonstrated by handing over a leashed dog from somebody that understands the energy dynamic, to somebody that does not understand how their personal energy and body language creates a mirroring effect in the dog they are now handling. A nervous, anxious handler or owner will produce a nervous, over excited, hard to handle, and possibly dangerous dog.

You start to hear things like, "My dog gets nervous around new people" and "My dog can't be around other dogs." Many times, these dogs do not start out this way, but deteriorate as they take on more and more of their insecure owner's traits in a process called transference. This is the cause of most surrenders to rescues, or dogs being left to live out their lives isolated in backyards for "behavioral issues".

The truth is: the dog no longer trusts the owner to lead or protect. It senses uncertainty and fear and is trying to step in and take the lead.

Inside everyone is a confident, calm, assertive presence that can be what a dog needs to thrive, but it takes understanding, knowledge and a little skill.
